MBCAC Artist Exhibit: 29 Palms Inn

January 1st - March 2nd: Ellie Tyler & Drew Reese

Transport yourself to another world by walking in to the 29 Palms Inn to view the photography of local artists Ellie Tyler and Drew Reese. Both photographers capture the moments where light transforms the natural environment around us and takes us into etheral dreamscapes. Since 1979, award winning nature photographer, Ellie Tyler has been intent on creating "visual poems " of what she defines as "the abundant beauty and serene simplicity of the natural word. I never manipulate an image beyond perhaps the addition of simple filtration in the field. Otherwise, it becomes obviously unreal and distorted which, in my opinion, defeats the purpose of nature photography." Drew Reese's photographs are all about the landscape of the desert. Through his viewfinder of his camera Drew sees 'the familiar' in a unique way. Drew has been drawing on the inspiring views of the Big Morongo Wildlife Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park incorporating a soft focus technique, the resulting photographs are more 'painterly' with a nod to the artists of the past. On display through March 2nd at the 29 Palms Inn, located at the Oasis of Mara. Visit the Inn at 73950 Inn Avenue in Twentynine Palms or for more information call 760 367-3505

MBCAC Artist Exhibit: The Hi-Desert Nature Museum

Through January 5th, Eva Montville

Eva Montville's wood sculptures wil be on display through January 5th. "I have always spent a lot of time in the wilderness and the desert in particular, as an instructor and for personal enjoyment and inspiration. It is where I feel most deeply connected with myself, most in touch with Source. My art is an attempt to bring something of this back with me. My sculptures reflect the beauty of the earth forms that I love in nature, and are also metaphors for a more inner kind of landscape. I want each sculpture to look like a treasure you might find on a walk in the wilderness, something worn by wind and water. My art embodies a paradox - intensely worked and highly finished, yet looking as if it were formed by nature. In this way, it is about links between inner and outer worlds, and the complex relationships of human creation with those of our natural universe. I want the immediate sensuality of my pieces to evoke in viewers a desire to go deeper within, to experience their own connection to Source." Eva Montville has lived much of her life in the Middle East. This has influenced her work in many ways, and explains her deep connection with the desert. She has been sculpting for 40 years, and her sculptures are in collections around the world. The museum is located in the Yucca Valley Community Center Complex at 57116 HWY 62. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10am-5pm. Admission is free; donations support the educational mission of the museum. For more information call 760 369-7212

29 Palms Art Gallery

Reception January 6th, 1-3pm

An exhibit of desert paintings and photography by Esther Shaw of Yucca Valley and Ellie Tyler of Joshua Tree opens the new year at Twentynine Palms Art Gallery. The show is on display Jan. 2 through Jan. 27, and a reception for the artists will be held at the gallery on Sunday, Jan. 6, from 12 to 3 p.m. Esther Shaw's series of oils on canvas, entitled "Intense Nature," is a representational response to the desert environment, and one she hopes will bring attention to the plight of shrinking wildlands. Her large, softly hued paintings feature parading quail, mysterious bobcats, desert landscapes, and Joshua trees burned and bleached from recent fires or standing adorned in desert snow. Award-winning nature photographer Ellie Tyler presents some of her best work in her "Earth Images" from Joshua Tree National Park and various southwestern desert locales. Simplicity of line, boldness of color, and a strong sense of harmony have become Tyler's signature, and most of her work is created in early morning or lae afternoon when the light is most dynamic. The gallery and giftshop hours are 12-3pm Wednesday through Sunday. The Art Guild and gallery are located at 74055 Cottonwood Drive (off National Park Drive) in Twentynine Palms. For more information call 760 367-7819 or visit 29palmsartgallery.com

MBCAC Artist: Wonder Garden Café

Through February 4th, Kevin Wong

Photography by Kevin Wong will be on display in 29 Palms at the Wonder Garden Cafe through February 4th. Kevin was born and raised in Berkeley, where his father worked for the University of California at Berkeley and instilled in all of his children a deep love for the culture and art that the campus presented. Both his mother and father are accomplished artists and work in painting, jewelry, stained glass, ceramics and photography. Kevin began his artistic education at home when he was quite young and then was enrolled in art classes at Studio One in Oakland, at the age of 8. Now living in the hi-desert town of Joshua Tree Kevin has found the desert provides inspiration to his imagination. His desert landscapes include the abandoned homesteads of human occupation. Weathered steel, wood and stone display the same desert patina that can be found in the faces of the portraits of his friends and neighbors. Wonder Garden Cafe, 73511 HWY 62 in Twentynine Palms. Open 8am - 3pm, Mon - Sat, closed Sundays. 706 367- 2429
